Workstation 9 - Slow network performance between host and guest

$

I am running windows 8 on the host and installed Workstaion 9 trial. Then installed windows 8.1 as a guest system.

I am getting slow, really slow network between the two.

If i send files to and from the guest with another computer, transfers are normal, but if I try same files between host and guest they are really slow.

I am using a Bridge connection.

I have read elseware to disable the following on the host adapter:

Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)

Large Send Offload v2 (IPv6)

But that did not help.

Thoughts?

VM's did not move to other ESX host when one of my ESX failed in HA cluster (vCenter 5)

Hi Friends,

I am new to this forum. I have a LAB setup in my laptop with Workstation 9.

CONFIGURATION

DC : Windows 2003

Shared storage : Starwind (Windows 2003)

VC- Windows 2003 (vCenter Server 5.0)

2 ESXi5 : ESXi5-1 & ESXi5-2

I have created a cluster with HA and DRS enabled for both ESX servers.

Installed windows 2003 in ESXi5-1 in shared storage and when I restart ESXi5-1 the VM did not move to ESXi5-2.

Note:  when I put ESXi5-1 in Manitenance mode the VM has migrated the ESXi5-2

I understand that and what you're doing however VMware Workstation runs an OS in a Virtual Machine and is essentially no different then what you do already from the physical machine so unless you have an other third party solution I do not see VMware Workstation being of any advantage over using the physical machine to do the same thing.

my server consisting two virtual machines only

2. i try to recreate the  .vmx file , it was created and booted normally, before this i have taken the backup of old vmx file. but  this vm cosnisting off 4 snapshots,  it was booted with last state , my entire is lost.it shows some error with 4snapshot and vmdk.

Too bad. It sounds like Workstation is like Fusion except it runs on Windows instead of Mac, correct?

I tried to create the raw disk, but got the following result:

unknown20c9d045826f:Library mike$ sudo vmware-rawdiskCreator print "/dev/disk3"

Nr      Start       Size Type Id Sytem

-- ---------- ---------- ---- -- ------------------------

1          1 3906963455 BIOS EE Unknown

unknown20c9d045826f:Library mike$ sudo vmware-rawdiskCreator create "/dev/disk3" "1" "~/Documents/Virtual\ Machines/My\ Raw\ Disk" lsilogic

Unable to copy the source files to the destination files.

unknown20c9d045826f:Library mike$

How I determined it was /dev/disk3 is that when I right click on the partition I want to use in Path Finder and select "Get Info", it shows /dev/disk3s2" for the device.

Here is what is in my Virtual Machines folder:

cd /Users/mike/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized

How to prevent SQL transaction full

$

Hi all,

Here's the story.

vCenter 5.0, SQL express 2005.

Last week, I changed the settings of Log history in vCenter from unlimited to keep 30 days.

Then after few days vCenter crashed because the SQL transaction log was full (cap at 5GB). So, I follow the KB:

- SQL restore: Simple

- Shrink the log file.

But today, after few days, the transaction log is full again.

How do I prevent the transaction log from becoming full?

Thanks in advance

Re: ADD A HOST WIZARD IS NOT RESOLVING THE HOSTNAME ONLY IP (ESXi5.1)

FIXED NSLOOKUP PROBLEM ON LOCAL WIN 7 DESKTOP WHERE VCLIENT INSTALLED BY:

Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center --> Local Area Connection --> Properties --> TCP/IPv4 Properties --> Advanced --> DNS tab --> Append these DNS suffixes (in order) and added appropriate domains such as mydomain.com

NOW NSLOOKUP RESOLVES PROPERLY BUT STILL ADD A HOST WIZARD NOT WORKING WITH SHORT HOST NAME. SEE IMAGE.NslookupErrorFixed.jpg

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

I know this is an old thread and marked correct in 2011, but it looks like it was done a bit the hard way.  Check it out - all on one line

Get-VirtualPortGroup | ?{$_.Name -eq "Port-Group-Goes-Here"} | Get-VM | Select Name, {$_.Guest.IPAddress}

ADD A HOST WIZARD NOT RESOLVING SHORT HOSTNAME ONLY IP & FQDN (ESXi5.1)

I was able to complete a successful install of VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.10100-1123965_OVF10.ova. I was able to login into VMware vCenter Server Appliance web page port 5480 and VMware web client at port 9443 and with vClient. All service are working properly. To me looks like a good install.

Then I encountered a host resolution error when using "Add a host wizard" in the vsphere client to add a host using its HOST NAME (not IP). It resulted in error when putting the host name instead of IP address. Here is the exact error and article associated with it: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1027672

I read the articles and made sure that I followed directions to fix this issue. My DNS is properly responding and resolving and I can directly login into the actual host name itself using vsphere client. The lock down mode is disabled. Besides this host name problem, I can create a host using its ip address but that is not my objective. I want to add a host using its host name. Any suggestion is appreciated. See image attached.

Re: Best practices... How many nics?

if you have vSphere Enterprise+ you could consider having two NICs and Network IO Control to manage the traffic. But these really should be 10G NICs then.

Regarding FT - it probably is a good idea to have dedicated NICs here, especially if the apps inside the VM are busy. However, a dedicated FT-related network infrastructure can have a significant impact on cost, so you may want to have a separate charge back mechanism and a respective SLA which truly reflects the power of FT (always on, like a hardware cluster). FT makes sense for applications which are truly mission critical and when the VM only needs 1 vCPU (as of vSphere 5.1). Examples could be home grown applications or any other apps which run on 1 vCPU and where HA is not good enough to provide sufficient uptime.

My 2c.

VMware told me that it is a issue with the blanking of the vsphere console when a user is connected over PCoIP. The blanking is consuming all the CPU of the vmx-svga.

VM ware open view client issue

I have the VM ware view client installed on my machine -

and there seem to be a ton of issues with the display protocols being used by VMware.

The client launches but I am see the following error

Jun 27 10:20:33.650: vmware-view| vmware-remotemks-container(2868) exited with status: 1

Following which I see a blank screen for the desktop. I did add the libraries to enable PCOIP. From what I understand this is the protocol used by the VMware client.

Re: Doubts regarding some interview questions

This looks more like a certification (VCP) test to me. To prepare for this type of scenario your should check out the VMware Certification resources. On the VCP-DV page you find an Exam Blueprint and a practice exam at the bottom right. That should give you more hands-on experience with questions like these. You also might want to check out the VCP Forum.

A side note (truly my 2c only): I find these questions tricky for an interview. When I joined VMware over 7 years ago I did have gaps in my detailed technical knowledge of some areas. But I had a very strong industry background, consulting references, and I knew a lot about applications, databases, and other topics. And now I get on very well here, because over the years I learned all I was missing.

Re: Partition drives or indiviual drive when running virtual servers?

I'd say that the differences are barely noticeable in every day life. You might get a little more speed (more spindles) and less impact if a drive fails with your first option (4 drives - 2 partitions), but you get more flexibility for placing larger VMs and less management overhead with the second option (2 drives - one partition). I'd probably pick the second option. But in the end it also depends on your overall architecture and SLAs you need to fulfill.

Casting to an [int] doesn't do rounding afaik

It's very bad, but do you have enough CPU resources on your host.

Also check the VM share value.
