Thank you Andrew. How can we check whether the hypervision is free or not?  Now I think it should have been free, but I don't know where to confirm it.  At first, I saw "The license for this host is 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU)." on the host's summary, I thought it was not free.

Hi,

The log snippets you supply unfortunately are not very helpful.

For the record, the one you are highlighting is "informational"

2016-09-28T09:22:57.114-04:00| vmx| I125: FILE: FileCreateDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\ProgramData\VMware): Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183)

The part "vmx| I125" and in particular the "I" stands for informational.

So please attach the full vmware.log file for somebody to look at. (Attach as a file please, don't copy content text into a reply)

Not sure, but "Auto detect"?

Are we talking about the same thing? I meant the display settings within Ubuntu, not in the VM settings.

I'm noticing issues that seem to happen fairly frequently now.  Beachball of death "only" in my fusion VM's.  I have a Windows 7 VM and Windows 8.1.  Both will exhibit the same issue randomly during the day.

My keyboard will lockup, and no mouse either.  Just the beach ball.  If I catch it quick enough I can move my mouse off that screen (I keep my VM's on there own screen of which I have 4 screens).  If I get the mouse out of the screen in time.  I can still use it on my main Mac Display (Showing Mac OS desktop, etc).  When I move the mouse back over the VM's, it shows a beach ball.  It lasts maybe 10 or so seconds before getting back to normal and being usable again.  I may get another few minutes before it happens again.  Or maybe an hour at times.  Again, pretty random.

I have had few issues with Fusion over the years on my many Macs.  I this one is definitely an issue that needs to be fixed soon, as I can't work like that.

I am about to reboot (everything), and reinstall the VM tools just in case that helps.  But, if anyone else has had this issue, and a fix.  Please share

Re: Storage clustered

Yes many high end servers will utilise a single internal SD or USB for the ESXI installation, this is the norm now unless you can boot from SAN etc. The advantage is that there are no spinning disks to fail and SD/USB is far cheaper. When ESXi loads, it loads into memory so having a disk there is just a waste of space and money. Some systems (Dell) support redundancy on the SD cards, so you can put in 2 SD cards for the ESXi install and it will mirror one to the other. If one fails it will use the other. If you dont have this and SD fails, ESXi will still continue running until the next reboot. ESXi is very quick to install again if needed anyway.

For SQL server performance, depending on how many IOPS you require / how busy the server is, NAS can be a good option, it generally depends on how many IOPS the NAS can deliver to the application (This is determined by how many disks you have in the NAS and their type etc) See here for a calculator: Disk RAID and IOPS | The Cloud Calculator

I would vary rarely recommend standard local disk configurations for anything as you lose HA and vMotion abilities between hosts in a cluster.

SAN can have better performance but it all depends on the bandwidth available to it and the IOPS you require, for small DBs NAS can work well.

Distributed switches and Standard switches co-exist?

Hi,

I have a cluster of ESXi hosts under a vCenter configured with Distributed switches. I need to create a new vSwitch to connect to a new storage. To accommodate the new vSwtich, I picked one of the ESXi hosts (say, host-a) and added two vnmics while leaving other hosts unchanged. I have two questions:

1. If I create a new distributed vSwitch for the new vmnics, what happens to the other ESXi hosts that do not have the newly added vmnics? Will it cause issues to other hosts?

2. If i create a new standard vSwitch on host-a instead, does it cause any issues since it's already using distributed vSwitches? that is, can a host use both Distributed and Standard vSwitches at the same time?

Thank you.

Re: Migration of SUSE Linux VMs from HyperV to ESXi

Let me warn you about something. Offline Linux migrations do not reconfigure the destination (the distro and version do not matter), there is a chance the VM won't boot. It is recommended to to a powered on conversion. It doesn't matter it is in Hyper-V, treat it as a physical machine.

Re: Strange ESXi 5.5 VM/Host Crash

Hello , I still have the same issue, for example, today the host CPU usage reached 100% (with 8 x 2.659Ghz) before getting completely blocked, and the only way was restart the server from the DRAC:

Could be fixed with an upgrade or patch ??:

My current ESXI version is:

~ # vmware -vl

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-2068190

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 Update 2

And my VCenter is: Version 5.5.0 Build 1300321

Regards.

OK, I think we have gotten to the bottom of this now. We are working on a fix.

I would redirect the users folders to a Home Share. I would configure all user profile management through UEM, if your environment and policies allow it.

Check out some of my other posts, they should help you make a decision.

vmkernel ports on vDS are not shown green

Hi guys!

We are performing migration our hosts from standard vSwitches to vDS. Everything looks good. Even after migration of pNICs and vmKernel ports connectivity is working normal. So both types of used vmkernel ports on each host (for Management and for vMotion) can be pinged from outside and between each other. I've just noticed strange picture on summary view of vDS. For some reason most of vmkernel ports are shown as disconnected after migration. Only one of vMotion ports looks in connected state (green). Please look at the picture bellow. Actually, all ports are working. Ping goes without any problem. Management of host and vMotion also don't have any problems. Maybe the problem lies somewhere deeper.

Please explain what could be a reason of this behavior. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Vladimir.

Hello:

I'm having the same issue, but I am needing to export the data in HTML format.  Here is the code I use to get the XML output using your variables:

So, my big problem is how do we get it into HTML format after getting the XML output just like if we were to use the web client.  If you figure that out, please let me know.

Re: cisco discovery protocol

Guys! Are you sure that vSS doesn't support CDP? In our infrastructure of ESXi hosts 5.1 cdp worked correctly. I haven't check this on ESXi 6 but I clearly remember that on vmware ICM courses v6 quite competent teacher told that it is possible. He marked that it is more confusing but it is not excluded from functional of vSS. Internet search gives us a command like this

~ # esxcfg-vswitch vSwitch0 -B both

Maybe it's deprecated, I am not sure.

Re: Migrate Problem From VDS to NK1 on vsphere 6

Dude, are you sure that you need 1000v? We also wanted to deploy it in our infrastructure. Moreover I successfully installed it in test environment and tested it. But later we realized that it's no longer supported and it will not be developed by Cisco as I know because of some disagreements between Cisco and VMware (at least I heard it from tutor on authorized courses). Do you really need to deploy this almost dead stuff in your environment? We finally decided to use original vmware vDS. As I know there are analogs of Nexus from IBM and other vendors.

As for your question, did you install correct versions of VEM of ESXi hosts? I didn't remember clearly but I suppose we had similar problem.

Re: Packaged printer drivers

Ray,

yes that's the normal setting (which prevents the warning), but now (this is a recent patch) if the computer have above path, and driver is not packaged it gives the error, the first thing you think is that the GPO setting is being ignored/not working, which is not the case, so warning is misleading.

Thanks

vSphere Web Client 5.5 does not list the Log Browser in the menu

0

Hi,

I am using the 5.5 virtual appliance and when I click on home after logging in to the web client I do not see Log Browser listed in the menu. Also, under /usr/lib/ there is no vmware-logbrowser directory.

I also logged into the appliance and it does not list the log browser in services.

any ideas why this would be ?

thanks,

John
