Hi,

VMware added the keyboard per virtual machine option in Fusion 7, I guess it is for adding more flexibility.

re. Only two physical keyboards, I'm not sure I understand what you mean, do you mean profiles?

There's 3 profiles, Windows, Default and Mac, you can add your own profiles if you like.

As for keyboard navigation, personally in windows VMs I use windows navigation and on Mac I use what is native to Mac, that way I use it properly and am not getting confused when working with physical machines.

If you want to consistently use Mac keyboard settings with windows applications as if in Mac OS X then maybe Unity is more your thing? (Menu -> View -> Unity )

Re: Backing up Veeam

You could use a built-in configuration backup (drop down menu > Configuration backup). Later, if something goes wrong with your Veeam server, you may want to reinstall Veeam B&R onto another server and then just import the configuration. That's why the backup of the database itself doesn't make that much sense.

Re: Replacing hosts and upgrading from 5.1 to 5.5

Hi,

I am not sure if you have a shared storage like SAN or NFS so that you can have your vm's there without any issues and can replace ESXi , if not then :

1. Make sure that two existing ESXi's are in a cluster.

2. Empty one host i.e. -> Power down the vm's and cold migrate to second host.

3.disconnect and remove first host from VC.

4. Add first new host to the cluster.

5. Cold migrate the vm from existing host to this new host and re[peat the same step for other host

Hi,

I am afraid you do not have any other option.If you have SAN replication at backend then even if you do not want to use SRM you can mount the snapshot lun to other SITE.

Have you limited the number of disks on the blueprint?

As far as i can tell, the Execute reconfiguration is the only thing required in the entitlement.

So basically the answer is to buy SRM and then you can have the answer:).

Problems getting tasklist

I have the following code

foreach (ReferenceType orgref in orgsList.Values)
            {
                    var taskRef = Organization.GetOrganizationByReference(client, orgref).GetTasksListRef();
                    var tasklist = TaskList.GetTaskListByReference(client, taskRef).GetTasks();
                    //Do Stuff }

It compiles fine and everything is dandy. Except, the tasklist is always empty, nothing is returned.

Am I searching the wrong place?

As far as I can understand from the documentation, it should have atleast some records.

Re: Advice needed on disabling synchronous consolidation

$

Welcome to VMware communities.

During snapshot remove operation, a consolidate helper disk is created and the delta disks were merged to its base flat disk for asynchronous consolidate operation to allow guest OS continue to run while consolidate. But if guest performs heavy writes to disk during consolidation then consolidate helper disk grows rapidly and further to merge we create another consolidate helper disk which also grows rapidly and it goes on for 10 iterations by default and finally after 10 iterations if we cannot consolidate disks asynchronously, then we stun the VM and perform synchronous consolidation. During this time VM is stunned and guest OS will freeze and its applications are unavailable.

To stop guest OS from freezing after 10 asynchronous consolidate and to perform synchronous consolidate, VMware introduced an vmx config option "snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync" in this patch and by default the value is "TRUE".

VMX config option "snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync" does mean that, after asynchronous consolidate of snapshot iteration (default 10 iterations) expires, do you want to perform synchronous consolidate (TRUE) or not (FALSE).

coolgod wrote:

*does this setting automatically modified in the patch ?

No, by default vmx config option snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync will set to "TRUE" even if option is not available in vmx config file of the VM and it allows snapshot consolidate to works as earlier before this patch. If you do not want to have guest OS stunned for synchronous consolidation, you should set vmx config option snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync="FALSE".

coolgod wrote:

*can i modify only this setting ?

If your VM replicating software did perform snapshot remove/consolidate successfully before patch then you dont need to worry on this setting snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync="FALSE".

coolgod wrote:

*when the KB says "Virtual machines might stop responding during a snapshot removal" does that mean the snapshot removal (consolidation) fails

or completes successfully?

With setting snapshot.asyncConsolidate.forceSync="FALSE" in vmx config file, after 10 asynchronous consolidate you will get an message post error "The maximum consolidate retries were exceeded."  and snapshot error "The operation failed" in VI client or web client and you will end up in having one vmfs sparse disk which is a consolidate helper disk used at last iteration of  asynchronous consolidate along with base disk and also virtual machine disks consolidation needed flag set and VM continues to run without freeze.

"

We are stopping replication and adding the LUN to the destination ESXi Host Storage Group.

I'm not familiar with RecoverPoint but, initilally I thought I would need to unmount and detach the Datastores/LUNs prior to resuming replication"

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeremy is correct but I want you to simply understand that here replication means storage team assign two LUN's from different site Storage device for replication. one LUN1 will be mounted to Your Production site Vcenter environment and another LUN2 will be mounted to your DR site VCenter environment which might be totally different Storage and different LUN ID. So what they do they Will use recovery Point appliance to replicate the data from LUN1 to LUN2 continuously. in a simple understanding-way,  if you want to have the data in a particular time they manually will break the replication and you can use the LUN2 in DR site . but how ever as Jeremy mentioned above everything can be automated by VMware SRM. what it does once you trigger the DR, it will automatically break the replication and complete other tasks. Break the replication means: technically the Recovery point appliance will take each and every second or minute snapshot of LUN1 and will copy it to LUN2. so according to that time you can have Data. below shows typical SRA replication

I had the same problem when opening it in Firefox 33.0, after I updated to vCenter Server 5.5. However, it worked for me in Chrome Version 38.0.2125.104 m.  After going to Actions > All vCenter Actions > Deploy OVF Template, I had to press allow to enable the plugin.

USB3 Drobo 16TB GPT Problems

$

I've been trying to track down the reason why only one of my VMs is able to access and mount the USB3 Drobo 16TB Raid box I have not found the cause, but I have found a difference in the logs:

Running gdisk, parted or trying to mount the drive on the bad machines just results in a hang, with 100% cpu usage, and the only way to get out of it is to HARD power down the machine.

This is the log from the VM that can't access the Drobo:
Oct 28 14:34:36 DISARCH kernel: scsi target0:0:0: FAST-40 WIDE SCSI 80.0 MB/s ST (25 ns, offset 127)

Oct 28 14:34:36 DISARCH kernel: scsi1 : ata_piix

Oct 28 14:34:36 DISARCH kernel: scsi2 : ata_piix

Oct 28 14:34:36 DISARCH kernel: scsi3 : usb-storage 2-1:1.0

Oct 28 14:34:38 DISARCH kernel: scsi 3:0:0:0: Direct-Access     Drobo    5D               5.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
And this is from the one that can:
Oct 28 14:47:36 ARCH kernel: scsi target1:0:0: FAST-40 WIDE SCSI 80.0 MB/s ST (25 ns, offset 127)

Oct 28 14:47:36 ARCH kernel: scsi2 : ata_piix

Oct 28 14:47:36 ARCH kernel: scsi3 : ata_piix

Oct 28 14:47:36 ARCH kernel: scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access     Drobo    5D               5.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
The major difference that I see is the " kernel: scsi3 : usb-storage 2-1:1.0" which is missing from the machine that can access the drive.

Any suggestions on how I can resolve this ?

Update 1

======

OK, I installed a USB3 passthrough and added it to the VM, and now, I don't even need to run gdisk, already on startup it is at 100% cpu usage ( kworker/u16:2 ) , here's the dmesg log:
